Bodington Hall

Bodington Hall

On the 15th November 2007, Leeds University decided to sell Bodington Hall, currently home to 1,150 Leeds University students and the location of a large number of the university's sports fields. They say they’re selling because the physical state of the accommodation isn't good. But since much of it was built as recently as 1992, how likely is it that it would already be in such a bad state as to warrant selling up and moving on ? And would Leeds University be able to charge ?100 per room per week if the physical state of the accommodation is as poor as they claim it to be ?

Another reason given by the university for selling Bodington is the length of time it takes to get to the university from the hall, which they claim is unreasonably long. But if this is so, then why does the university intend replacing Bodington's playing fields with new playing fields at Clonmore Farm near Eccup ? After all, Clonmore Farm is even further out than Bodington and unlike Bodington, isn't on a bus route.

If Leeds University genuinely believes that Bodington is too far away from its main campus, then it should be providing its students with sports facilities that are closer to the main campus, and not ones that are even further away. Instead, it's building on its existing sports faciltities on the main campus (the former Leeds Grammar School playing field) and transferring its other sports facilities to Clonmore Farm.

Presumably, when the university has relocated its playing fields to cheap green belt land at Clonmore Farm, it will be able sell Bodington Hall and its playing fields at development land prices.
